Bailey Sarian Owes Bettie Page and Fans an Apology

BY TORI RODRIGUEZ

The popular YouTube star and “historian” started a false rumor that Bettie was a murderer.

This is a companion piece to the Official Bettie Page Podcast, Episode 2: Rectifying a Smear Job Against Bettie. (Click title to listen.)

As the manager of Bettie Page’s official social media sites, I’ve enjoyed seeing the love and admiration shared by fellow Bettie lovers over the years. Ranging from praise for her stunning physical attributes to comments about how she has helped countless women and others embrace and express their authentic selves as she did, it’s always nice to see Bettie receive the respect and appreciation she deserves.

So imagine my surprise when comments containing false allegations started popping up on some of the posts on Bettie’s social media pages. Here are just a couple of the many gems these kind, intelligent humans saw fit to post on a public thread:

“Celebrating the birthday of a murderer… smh”

“I love her but she was a complete psychopath and murder – like stabbed someone to death while reciting the bible.”

“If Bettie wasn’t a crazy super religious murderer I would love her more.”

“Bettie Page is a crazy Christian an murdered someone.”

It turns out these comments were a direct result of Bailey Sarian’s “Murder Mystery & Makeup” series, specifically an episode in which she weaves a false narrative painting Bettie as a murderer. First, she named the episode “Bettie Page a Killer?” – although it’s easy to find out through even the most basic, lazy online search – that the answer is definitely “No.”

Then she proceeds to tell this complete mess of a story, interspersed numerous times with comments like “I feel like I might be making this up” and “ I don’t even know if this is true,” and most egregiously, “I remember watching an interview… where I swear she mentioned that she killed the lady.” (Wrong.)

Sarian also claims that details about these incidents are hard to find and wonders why no one has talked about them – although many have, including me. Most Bettie fans are well-aware of the long list of traumas and other hardships Bettie endured throughout her life before her death at age 85 – none of which were mentioned by Sarian for any kind of context.

Some folks think mental illness is just hilarious! By the way, it wasn’t prision; it was a psych hospital.

Some folks think mental illness is just hilarious! By the way, it wasn’t prision; it was a psych hospital.

Central among these was her long struggle with paranoid schizophrenia, a debilitating brain disorder that can cause hallucinations, delusions, emotional and social impairment, and disorganized thinking and speech. Schizophrenia is reportedly the most stigmatized of all mental illnesses, and people with the disease have a much higher suicide risk as well as greater odds of being a victim of crime and exploitation compared to people without schizophrenia. While these individuals are generally no more violent than others, untreated schizophrenia has been linked to an increased risk of violence.

Bettie did not receive adequate treatment for her illness – or presumably for the countless traumatic events she suffered – until later in life, despite multiple encounters with the mental healthcare and criminal justice systems where she presumably should have been helped. [Sadly, this gap persists  – currently, less than half of US adults with mental illness receive needed treatment and support, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).]

During two of numerous psychotic breaks, Bettie was accused of assaulting different landlords with a knife in separate incidents in 1979 and 1982. They all survived, contrary to Sarian’s sloppy implication. Bettie was found not guilty by reason of insanity and cumulatively spent more than 8 years at Patton State Psychiatric Hospital in California before transitioning to a group home setting.

While she was deemed not criminally responsible for her actions due to her inability to understand the nature of her actions during these psychotic episodes, she still paid dearly with many years of institutionalization. (Nonetheless, Sarian says, “She got off the hook a lot,” and asks, “How many chances does one person get in their lifetime?”)

Bettie tattoo and Bettie bangs bedamned, this dame bites Bettie’s style while trashing her name.

Bettie tattoo and Bettie bangs bedamned, this dame bites Bettie’s style while trashing her name.

These events have been covered publicly numerous times, including in Mark Mori’s documentary Bettie Page Reveals All, and in Bettie Page: The Lost Years, the book I wrote with Bettie’s nephew Ron Brem that features Bettie’s letters written to her family while she was institutionalized at Patton State. In one of these letters, she denies having assaulted anyone and describes in detail the life circumstances and immediate situation leading to the confrontation. (And while these and other details about Bettie’s life and condition don’t justify or minimize any harm that may have occurred, they certainly do explain a lot.)

So, it’s really weird, self-serving, and just plain untrue that Sarian could only find “like two articles” on these topics, as she states. Especially in light of her new show focusing on “lesser known history stories,” in partnership with a company co-founded by Jimmy Kimmel, she has even more of a responsibility to do thorough research and consult with experts before making potentially false and damaging claims. It is alarming to know that she will have an additional, possibly larger platform on which to spread harmful historical inaccuracies without ever addressing the smear job she singlehandedly launched and continues to perpetuate against Bettie.

The hateful comments and false accusations about Bettie started appearing on social media only after Bailey Sarian posted her YouTube episode – which has over 4.5 million views at present, and as Mark Mori and I discuss in our podcast, an apology and retraction are clearly in order. Sarian should go out of her way to make sure her viewers understand that her video contains inaccuracies and stigmatizing material.

She basically started a rumor that Bettie was a murderer and spread this rumor to her millions of fans, and nearly two years later, she obviously has not realized how wrong this was, both because it’s untrue and because it further stigmatizes people with mental illness – and let’s not forget, this includes those close to us who simply haven’t revealed their condition to us yet. They are watching and listening, along with people who will emulate Sarian’s stigmatizing, dehumanizing treatment of these already vulnerable and marginalized individuals. They deserve far more compassion, respect, and understanding, and we owe it to them and our communities to educate ourselves about mental illness.

Toward the end of her video, Sarian says, “I loved Bettie Page” (past tense), encourages her viewers to “Get better idols,” and says she herself should heed this advice, what with her zombie Bettie tattoo and all. (She also borrowed Bettie’s look without credit in subsequent videos.) Personally, I can think of few better icons to admire than one who found the strength to overcome unrelenting hardship and went on to become the most emulated person in global history.

Mystery Solved: The Mudflap Girl Is Bettie Page

BY TORI RODRIGUEZ

Despite other claims to mudflap fame, there’s no disputing the original image that obviously inspired the design.

Bettie Page and yet another pop culture classic she inspired — the Mudflap Girl

Bettie Page and yet another pop culture classic she inspired — the Mudflap Girl

I have always been intrigued and slightly delighted with the Mudflap Girl — that pretty, perky silhouette that famously graces the mud flaps of some trucks. I often wondered about the origin of the image, and it’s an amusing full-circle situation to have realized who actually inspired her — none other than the Queen of Pinups herself.

The design is said to have been created in the 1970s by Bill Zinda for his truck and auto accessory business in Long Beach, California. “It is variously claimed to be modeled on Leta Laroe, a famous exotic dancer at the time,” or on the mother of the guy who bought the trademark for the design in 2010, according to Wikipedia. The latter version has been repeated in Wired, BUST and elsewhere.

I hereby declare that neither of those claims are accurate, unless one of the women happened to be a Bettie impersonator who had this photo of her and studied, practiced, embodied, and copied it to a tee – highly unlikely. What’s far more likely is that Zinda simply based his design on this shot of Bettie from the 1950s.

Mudflap Bettie in all her gorgeous glory!

Mudflap Bettie in all her gorgeous glory!

I think you’ll agree that the Mudflap Girl image is in fact a slightly exaggerated Bettie Page – the pose, the hair, the posture, the body, just everything. It’s clearly her.

But wait! Check out Bettie’s sister Goldie doing mudflap pose, below right, on one of the beach towel designs available in our shop along with the Mudflap Bettie towel. This shot of Goldie is from a photo set of Bettie and Goldie at Coney Island, featured in the book Bettie Page: The Lost Years. (The photog who shot the Mudflap Bettie pic is unknown.) We’ll never know which sis did it first, but the Mudflap Girl design is most certainly modeled after Bettie. ♥

The Bettie Page Workout: 5 Mindful Tweaks to Make It Easier

BY TORI RODRIGUEZ

Our fitness videos are created with a body-positivity focus that encourages viewercisers to listen to their bodies, work at their own pace, and adjust any of the moves as needed. And even though the workouts are designed to accommodate various fitness levels, our Bettie Page Fitness: Total Body Strength and Cardio video might feel too challenging at times.

Don’t cry — just modify!

Don’t cry — just modify!

Below are 5 ways to make it more doable if you: are new to fitness or this kind of workout or getting back into it after time off; need to dial back the intensity when you’re tired or recovering from illness or injury; or just damn well feel like it. These tips also double as ways to make your whole approach to fitness more mindful and body-positive, since they encourage you to slow down and be purposeful about tuning into your body to see what it really needs in terms of pacing and rest.

Background: There are four circuits in the full 45-minute workout – the first three include upper and lower-body strength exercises using dumbbells and plyometric cardio bursts between strength sets. The fourth circuit hits abs before the stretch and cooldown at the end.

♥ Pick a circuit, any circuit. Each one takes about 10-12 minutes. You could do one per day, or maybe do one strength & cardio circuit plus the abs circuit and stretch for a well-rounded routine that you can knock out about in 20 minutes. Or do 2 strength & cardio circuits. There are lots of ways to mash this up into various shorter workouts and still get tons of physical and mental benefits.

Working out shouldn’t be this hard — fitness should help you, not hurt you!

Working out shouldn’t be this hard — fitness should help you, not hurt you!

♥ Cut the reps. Just do every other one – when we do 12, you do 6. Rest for the extra repetition in between or take more time for each of your reps. Or do 6 or 8 of the 12 and use the remaining time for a slightly longer recovery period between sets. A good general rule of thumb is to only do as many reps as you can do with proper form (for optimal safety and strength-building purposes), so if you find that you start really struggling or half-assing it after a certain point, skip the rest of that set and come back strong for the next one. This is definitely a quality-over-quantity situation.

♥ Stay high. (Heh.) Our thigh and butt muscles use tons of energy, so lots of deep squats and lunges can wear you out quickly if you’re, say, low on energy or getting used to a new workout. In that case, don’t dip as low in the squats and lunges; instead of squatting until your thighs are parallel to the floor, for example, aim to lower about 6 inches. And guess what – it’s actually a good idea to sometimes work in partial ranges of motion like in a half squat, as this has different effects on muscle fibers that you won’t get when you’re always using the same range of motion.

♥ Use lighter dumbbells or none at all. It can be great to master the moves with less or no weight, and you’ll feel extra strong in each move as you add more weight over time. You might also find that you can get more length and spring in your moves because you don’t have to keep the dumbbell as close to your body for fear of overloading a joint or tendon. Basically, you’ll have more control and freedom of movement, and this can bring a whole different feel and set of benefits to it.

Drop the dumbbells and take a break if you need to — no shame in self-care!

Drop the dumbbells and take a break if you need to — no shame in self-care!

♥ Break up the moves. This workout includes a lot of compound movements, which use multiple muscle groups at once, and some combine upper and lower body moves. This is more functional – i.e. makes more sense for the movements required of us in real-life situations – and allows us to pack in more in less time. But it uses more energy and effort because of increased demands for balance, core strength, and cardiovascular activity. Separate the moves when it’s a bit too much – for example, when we do the narrow squat with upright row at the bottom of the squat, do the row after each squat (at the top) instead.

Part of keeping a healthy and functional approach to fitness is doing whatever is needed to make your workouts work best for you so that you can stay safe, strong, and motivated in the long-term. There is no benefit in pushing yourself too hard and hurting yourself or losing your motivation to stay engaged with regular exercise. Checking in with your body to see if it needs any modifications each time you work out is an excellent, simple self-care practice that can strengthen your sense of body awareness along with keeping you safe and well.

Make your workout work for you. You got this!

Keep Your Hands Off Your Face!

It’s a key piece of advice to slow the spread of coronavirus, but DAMN it’s hard to do. These 13 tips should help.

Jayne Mansfield doing the now-taboo face-touching (and showing off her shoulder mobility ;-))

By Rose Kennedy, for the AJC

While the No. 1 strategy is to avoid close contact with infected people, according to the CDC, the virus can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces. To halt that line of infection, the CDC wants you to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer when soap and water aren't at the ready, and [avoid touching your face with unwashed hands] …because "it's possible to pick up COVID-19 after touching something an infected person touched, then touching your own eyes, nose, or mouth," Debra Jaliman, MD, board-certified dermatologist and American Academy of Dermatology spokesperson told Health

Note that none of these experts says it's easy to stop touching your dang face. Keep in mind, touching your face is a human habit, not some character weakness. One landmark study of 26 medical students in 2015 found that each subject touched his or her face 23 times an hour on average.

And a study published in the PLOS ONE journal in 2019 asserted that
"every human being spontaneously touches its eyes, cheeks, chin and mouth
manifold every day. These spontaneous facial self-touches (sFST) are elicited
with little or no awareness... Self-touch frequency has been shown to be
influenced by negative affect and attention distraction and may be involved in
regulating emotion and working memory functions."

This is why simply telling people not to do it isn’t very effective. Read the full story here for 13 expert tips to help you keep your paws off your lovely face: https://bit.ly/ajc-touchingface

Full Moons With Bettie & June!

Stellar shots and self-growth inspired by the full Harvest Moon

bettie and june - moon couch.jpg

June King was a fellow Irving Klaw model who appeared in that infamous cat-fight video and several photos with our Queen. Bettie called June her “idol among models” (what an honor from the ultimate supermodel!) and considered her a personal friend – one of the very rare female friendships Bettie had in her lifetime. I adore the photos from this shoot they did together, and the moon couch is such a cute touch for their full-moon flashing.

bettie and june moon couch.jpg

Speaking of full moons, tonight we’ll get to see the full Harvest Moon – which, unlike Bettie’s and June’s, will be what’s known as a “micromoon.” AND it won’ t fall on a Friday the 13th again until 2049 – lucky us! Be sure to check it out a little after midnight (12:33am to be exact) for best views, says Science. 😉

In addition to cheeky puns, the Harvest Moon offers the perfect opportunity for inward reflection as we prepare to transition into the new season. Sit under the moon tonight for a few minutes and try the simple reflection and imagery exercise below.

bettie and june hair - moon couch.jpg

What seeds have you sown this summer – what did you learn, accomplish, or discover about yourself that you want to continue to cultivate? What no longer serves your growth and needs to be pruned or left behind? Say a few words of gratitude for whatever gifts this summer brought to you.

Next, notice the moon’s clarity, brilliance, fullness and beauty, and know that those qualities are yours to claim. Take a good look and a big deep breath in, then close your eyes and breathe out as you imagine those qualities washing over you. Do this one by one for each of these and any other traits you notice about the moon that you wish to internalize.

Happy harvesting!!

Happy Birthday to The Little Book of Marilyn!

Get a double dose of pinup power with the Queen of Pinups & the Goddess of Glam

bettie and marilyn books.jpg

Although Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe share space at the pinnacle of pinup stardom, people often like to pit these queens against each other – as in, “Are you a Bettie or a Marilyn?” But these two actually have lots in common, along with their own unique attributes worthy of our adoration and emulation, so why draw inspiration from both of these powerful, trailblazing women?

You learned all about being a Bettie in my book that was released last year, The Little Book of Bettie: Taking a Page from the Queen of Pinups. Now you can learn how to use Marilyn as your muse in Michelle Morgan’s wonderful new release, The Little Book of Marilyn: Inspiration from the Goddess of Glam, the second book in the “Little Book” of badass women series by Running Press. This gem is organized in a similar framework to the one I created for the Bettie book, so you can look forward to beauty and fashion how-to’s and DIY crafts, in addition to learning more about Marilyn’s backstory and the modern-day women she inspires.

I had the pleasure of interviewing this delightful author to get the full scoop on her latest Marilyn tribute. Check out our chat below.

Tori Rodriguez: How did you first learn about Marilyn, and what is it that feeds your interest in her?

Michelle Morgan: When I was very small – probably no older than four or five, I watched Some Like it Hot on the television. I absolutely loved it, and for ages afterwards I asked my mum when “that film with the men dressed as ladies” would be coming back on! The funny thing was that I don’t even recall noticing Marilyn in the film at that point, because I was so busy laughing at Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis! Of course, growing up she was always on my radar because everybody knew about Marilyn and her career. However, by 1985 (when I was 15), Marilyn was even more noticeable to me because I was a huge Madonna fan and she dressed up as Marilyn in her video for “Material Girl.”

Later that year I went on holiday with my parents and my brother, and I saw a photo of Marilyn in the gold dress. It really struck a chord with me, and that night I told my parents that I was going to buy a book about her to read on the beach. The next day we went to a book shop and I was lucky to find an excellent biography by Fred Lawrence Guiles. I read it and was absolutely hooked. I spent all of my holiday money on postcards and pictures of Marilyn, and I remember my mum being concerned that I might be wasting my hard-saved money on what could be a passing fad. Little did she know – and little did I know – what was going to happen in the future!

I think for me, what feeds my interest is that I am deeply inspired by Marilyn’s life and career. She didn’t have the best start in life, and she suffered from depression and anxiety, but my goodness she was determined to make the best of her life. She is a brilliant role model and has brought so many wonderful people and opportunities into my life.

TR: How did The Little Book of Marilyn come about, and what can readers expect to find within the book?

MM: My publisher – Running Press – had just published your book about Bettie Page, and they were looking to do others in the series. My editor asked if I’d like to do one about Marilyn, so of course I said yes! I sent her some ideas, and we brainstormed back and forth until we came up with what we both thought would be a really worthwhile book. Readers can expect to see a short biography, interviews with fans, make-up and hair tutorials from the wonderful Suzie Kennedy, crafts, photos of items Marilyn owned, places she visited, and so much more!

TR: What was something new you learned while writing this book?

MM: One of the things I learned was that I can actually coordinate craft projects and photo sessions! I had never done that before, and it was definitely the hardest part of the book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. In the end, these parts of the book turned out to be something of a family affair: My good friend Suzie Kennedy did the make-up and hair tutorials, while my parents’ neighbor took the photos, then my aunt wrote the bag and hat tutorials, my mum and I helped cut out the material, and my dad photographed it all! So, I was very lucky with those sections, and the book means even more to me because of that.

TR: What are a few of the top takeaways you hope readers will gain from your book?

MM: I hope that readers will gain an insight into just how inspirational Marilyn can be and what a joy and life-changing experience it can be to be a fan! I spoke to various fans in the book, and each one has a lovely story to tell about how Marilyn has inspired them and changed their lives. She’s certainly changed mine, so if readers take away anything, I hope it’s the joy that being a fan can bring and just how much inspiration they can gain from Marilyn’s life and her career.

TR: For new fans of yours who love this book, they’ll be happy to know you’ve written others about Marilyn – tell us a bit about those and what’s next!

MM: Yes, I’ve written many books about Marilyn over the years. My first one was back in 1995 and was called Marilyn’s Addresses. Then in 2007, I wrote a full-length biography called Marilyn Monroe: Private and Undisclosed. That was expanded, revised and republished in 2012. After that I co-authored Before Marilyn, which was a book dedicated to Marilyn’s modeling career, and then last year saw the publication of The Girl: Marilyn Monroe, The Seven Year Itch and the Birth of an Unlikely Feminist. All of these books have a place in my heart, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to write them. Will I write another Marilyn book? Watch this space!

I’ve got four projects coming out next year (so far!), and while I’m extremely excited about all of them, I’m sworn to secrecy until the publisher announces them. Rest assured, I’ll be shouting from the rooftops when I’m able to share details, so please check my social media (@MMWriterGirl) and my website (www.MichelleMorgan.co.uk) for all the latest details!

♥   Rasa (prices vary by product; free shipping for orders over $50 -- wearerasa.com) ~ A special cup of soothing goodness fit for a queen – like your mother! Packed with healing, yummy herbs and scents to die for, their heavenly concoctions make for the perfect little daily ritual to sip on some self-care. All 3 blends are sublime and loaded with adaptogens, those Ayurvedic darlings that help nourish our bodies and minds and increase our resilience to all kinds of stress. As a chocolate junkie, I’m partial to the Cacao Rasa blend, made with “fair-trade cacao beans for a mood-boosting, luxurious treat you can't get enough of… yet is still packed with adaptogens and antioxidants,” as described on their website. While you’re there, check out their full range of delectable herbal goodies and gifts.
